Introduction: Early Life to Death
Joan of Arc was born in Domrémy, Bar, France in 1412. She was born into the French peasant class, and her parents were very religious. Like most peasants, she never learned to read and write. Some historians believe that she was clairvoyant, which is a person who has knowledge of events happening far away or in the future without using any of the five senses. Around the age of 12 or 13, she started having religious visions and hearing the voices of saints. She developed many similar characteristics as the saints she was hearing, and mental and physical courage as well.
Joan was sent with the French army to the city of Orleans, which was surrounded by the English. Joan carried a banner with religious pictures that bore the name of Jesus everywhere she went. She gave the troops directions and encouragement, and they came to believe that god was on their side. The French then fought better than ever before, and had defeated the English. In May 1931 Joan was captured by the English, and was executed on May 30, 1931.
